The Human Billboard Script for Selling Personal Training

Posted on January 23, 2009 By Bedros

In this three part video I invite personal training studio owner, and group training guru Steve Hochman to my house to hang out, shoot some pool, and watch pulp fiction… but then I ambushed him with my video camera and got him to spill the beans about his top secret system for getting tons of personal training clients - FAST.

Check it out…

georgette pann @ 1:58 pm

hi
Some good ideas..thank you!

Chad Falco @ 3:51 pm

Lots of good info. Already doing similar things but I now have a new idea on how to take a new direction on a already moving plan. Awesom…

Raven Lewis @ 4:44 pm

I have been reading and following lots of the emails and other information from Bedros, and I think this was one of the best. Its pure simple math, but it makes complete (dollars &) sense. Love it Thanks!
BTW my loop hole is that I dont have a studio yet…i also live in Chicago (where its cold out now) any suggestions?

Absolutely brilliant - I can’t thank you guys enough for putting this info out there for us to consume for free!

Bedros and Steve, not only are you guys hilarious and informative, you’re 2 very good people. I hope to get the chance to meet you both in person one day.

Take care brothas!

Mike Rodder @ 4:36 pm

Rich DiSanto @ 5:44 pm

Bedros:
Again, you BRING IT! Great piece on Group Training. The math really works, and it will change how I approach my program set-up. Great Job!
All the best. Rich

Man, I love this stuff. I already created my call script and going to start making some calls right now.

Looking at launching an 8a “Stay at home mommy” camp and this will be perfect.

Thanks guys!

Bedros. I really loved the videos. I believe I can implement this where I work as I am the fitness director. The one problem I have trying to implement such a thing is that my boss (general manager) already devaules training as it is. The reason I say this, is that we actually only charge $10 more the price you were mentioning in the video for 1/2 hour training sessions and only another 20 more for 1 sessions. I was wondering at what type of price could I come up with for group training when our regular prices are already so low. I guess thats not the main problem though. I mentioned that the boss devalues training, she does this by giving away personal training sessions to a certain classification of memberships. We have certain members that pay more per month for their membership but because they pay more they end up getting free personal training. They get 24 1/2 hour sessions or 12 hour sessions for free. I believe this devalues our personal training. Do you or anybody else feel the same about this?

Thanks

Hey Bedros,
This is my first e-mail to you since I have been getting your info…..I have been in this industry for for over twenty years and I havn’t found or seen anyonyone that could connect with me about the importance of helping yourself to help others….you are an inspiration and thanks for the Videos.

Casey George @ 8:26 pm

Great content Bedros…love the new blog and can’t wait for FitProNewsletter 2′s debut.

@Chase …that sucks man! is there anywhere else in your area you can train or have you thought of venturing off on your own. If so, get Bedros’ PT Business Course, its well worth the investment

January 27, 2009

Dave duCille @ 5:18 pm

It only devalues your training if they aren’t upcharging the premium membership significantly, otherwise, it’s actually showing the value of personal training. I’m sure the GM is taking the big cut of the money so your trainers aren’t seeing much of it.

Dave duCille @ 5:24 pm

I would like to say that a lot of this sounds great in theory but in practice it is more difficult to implement. 1. A lot of people don’t like working in groups, especially with strangers. 2. Many people DO still like to pay by cash and check and are wary of EFT because they feel like they are trying to be conned into something.

I realize that through proper positioning and “selling” these objections can be overcome, but they are definate strong objections from people. I’ve been using a similar pricing structure for bootcamps in Central Park here in NYC and it’s still a challenge to get people into the class, even at $129 a month for a 3x per week class.

BK @ 8:01 pm

@Dave D. This isnt about price at all. I bet you can drop your bootcamp prices down to $99/month and still get the results you’re getting.

Its about the script, what it says, how it moves the person to action, and the value it builds. The fact that its a low price is just the frosting on the cake.

Bedros

Chase Kaufman @ 10:11 pm

Thanks Casey

Your right.. It does suck. I have thought about going out on my own and each day I am getting closer to doing that. Although that means I am doing things SLOWLY..which I know Bedros wouldnt like.

As for Dave.. I am guessing you were making the comment about upcharging the membership to me and mentioning the GM is taking a cut. Normally for regular personal training clients we pay our trainers 75%.. way more than what other clubs in our area pay out to their trainers. But when it comes to the special increased membership that we have where we offer the training for free.. we are only paying the trainers practically half of what they normally would make. Doing this of course doesnt help moral with the trainers..

Allura @ 2:14 pm

Chase, perhaps you guys can tell the members paying the higher rate that PT is included in the rate as a bonus. And instead of them getting the full 24 all at once, it can be spread out of the course of a year. This is better than free… :-)

Allura @ 2:21 pm

How do you get the Human Billboard Contract that must be signed by the 1st 20 participants?

February 3, 2009

BK @ 12:39 am

@Allura,

email me at bedros at fitpronewsletter dot com and I’ll get you a copy.

Bedros,
You rock! I love your newsletters and all of this helpful stuff you share with us. And you are absolutely right, you are reaching out to more people through us!
I love Fitpro..one of your biggest fans and can’t wait for the next release..seriously chomping at the bit over here!
thanks for helping us help others! Keep up the good work!
Lisa ;o)

Chase Kaufman @ 9:07 pm

Allura

Well what you mentioned is exactly what the members are getting. I have some clients that actually do the free training multiple times a week and then I have others that just spread it out over the whole year. So when they do that, they dont get/pay for any more training. So personally I feel that giving away the training to them is a devalue and it also takes away revenue in terms of them actually wanting to pay for personal training.

Its the general manager and the marketing director that are listing that training as being free if they pay for that higher membership clasification.

Since I have some attention of some of you on here I am looking for an opinion from you and maybe Bedros you can help me with this also. I was wondering what is the merit of waiver forms. Basically where I work now, we dont have the members sign waiver forms when they become members and we also dont have the members sign any waiver forms when they do any programs with us (i.e training or other special events). I have asked the general manager about this and she has stated that one of our owners said that we will not get waivers signed because they dont help with anything. I was wondering what any of you think about this.

Thanks

Chase

What happened to video 2???

coach oscar @ 9:12 pm

hi raven,

this year i started my “outdoor” bootcamp during the winter season by going indoors. i made an agreement with a dance studio in the neighborhoods i serve and on those cold mornings and bad weather days, we work inside on a large, open dance floor. when it is nicer, we go back outside. hope that helps.

This is the easiest but the best stuff I have heard. I am usually optimistic about what I hear, see, believe, but this is great. I look forward to future business for myself with my clients

THe little trick with the phone is more annoying than anything.
Selling shouldnt be hard. Being elequent, and pushy will get you in trouble with people who dont give a crap about that stuff.

Ive never found an easy way to sell to people.
The best customer is the one who comes with check in hand.

Derek Frazier @ 9:34 am

Most trainers who are getting into PT and bootcamps are people who are not social butterflies. So knowing 50 people who have money will take 1-2 years to develop.

They want to make money and they try to figure out how to do what they love, then they find out that people dont like to pay and workout!

Pay to workout! No way Jose.
HAHA.

Point: Save your money and if you do go into business, do things that people are used to seeing. Like start a nice, clean, and beautifully designed yoga studio, where people can relax or alternatively get excited about coming to. Find examples of prominent fitness business owners, copy their success in the area that you have chosen to research. This is the best way to learn how to start a business.

A remember, IT TAKES $ to MAKE $.

Unless of course you think you have a PHENOMENAL/THOUGHT OUT/BREAKTHROUGH idea for a bootcamp and a yearly, substantial, marketing budget with a list (local email/spam is somewhat effective).

Im not trying to be a butthead. Im just warning some of you folks before you blow your credit and savings.

Also, for the record, Im glad I met Bedros online. He has a great attitude and motivates people to do their best.

Hey guys,

I love watching these videos they give so much good information im having a hard time figuring out which ones to implement first!
I plan on using these methods, duh, for my business but when steve was talking about the beginning list of 50 people. i thought, well im new to my area and most of my contacts are too far away to take part in my training head on. so i thought, how can i use this to my advantage… well duh high tech trainer! im going to use pretty much the same method for htt but with more than 50 beginning names… i guess my question is has anyone else tried this with HTT and how did it go…

again thanks so much for all you do,

ps FBS ROCKED cant wait for next year… steves lil costume was hilarious

James @ 6:36 pm

Hey Steve and Bedros.

I trained at Steve’s gym in Irvine, CA and I can’t believe you guys are offering these tips for FREE. I signed up over 50 clients in about 45 days at Steve’s gym. I had just moved from NM to CA and had $600 in my pocket. Steve is the first guy in my life who really motivated me to be positive, help groups of people, and to give a ton expecting only a little or nothing in return.

I seriously would have never made six-figures if it wasn’t for Steve and Bedros.

Bedros, I have been reading your blog for years, but have never commented. I am glad to see that you Steve, and Chris McCombs are doing so much for trainers!

The trainers who this won’t work for are the ones who think they already have it figured out. I followed Steve’s advice and just got started immediately. I seriously went straight from Steve’s gym to the mall and recruited my 20 walking billboards that moment.

Thanks!

Hey guys,

this is great stuff….just curious if someone checked your math (accountants love to test me on my math:-)….I undertstand the 52 weeeks a year idea and never really thought of it before, but makes since and is true. However, what if someone says “wait, i’m doing 3 days a week x’s say $35 a session x’s 4 weeks a month, that is $420 where are you getting $455?

I know it’s not a big difference in money but I DO have these people that I train with and they ARE accountants. (only one hassles me when I come up with pricing stuff.

dawn

dawn @ 12:57 pm

Oh and is this based on 30 min, 45min or 60 min sessions? :)

September 22, 2009

dave duCille @ 7:43 am

Dawn, every 3 months there is a month with 5 weeks in it so in a 3 month period you actually have 13 weeks. you need to account for this when doing an eft monthly based pricing structure.

[...] 4. The Human Billboard Army. This one is simple and it works best if you do boot camps and group training. Basically you're going to have an army of local people (who are connectors) refer you leads in exchange for training. My buddy Steve Hochman created this system. You can watch this video where he explains the entire HB marketing system. [...]

Hey Bedros,

All your info is great, I’m a System 9 member and on a FitPro newsletter trial. (I’ll definitely keep that month to month!) Could your team please email me a copy of the Human Billboard contract please? (I’d ask you but is it in your 5%) I’ve got my list of 50 and dialling as we speak.

So much good info on the site.

Cheers

Hey Bedros could I also get a copy of the HB Agreement Contract? I tried e-mailing you but it said that your mailbox was full. Thanks.

October 21, 2012

Molly @ 5:38 pm

This is so helpful. I’m renting space at a local dance studio beginning Nov.12th. Hoping my outdoor peeps will follow me indoors. May I also get a copy of the HB Agreement Contract? My friend is a member of your Mastermind group and raves about your coaching. She has really come a long way in a short time with her business and i’m hoping to follow in her footsteps and one day get into your focus group! Thank you for helping us!
