You Probably Didn’t Know This About Me

Posted on July 31, 2010 By Bedros

I’m kind of a vegan. By that I mean I AM A VEGAN who also eats fish and egg whites and I pretty much only eat whole and organic foods. I even chew chemical free gum…

but I’m not a tree huger… not that there’s anything wrong with that :)

Not really sure what that technically makes me, so I just say Vegan who eats fish and egg whites.

When most people hear that the first thing they ask is how do I build or maintain muscle. Well, I’m 6 foot, 224 lbs at the moment with visible abs, and pressing 225 for reps on the incline bench and following it up with 100 lbs db presses on the flat for reps. And I squat three plates for reps, typically after a few sets of leg presses.

Oh.. and on a side note I do 200 push ups a day – sometimes in sets of 50 through out the day and other times I pile them all together in around 9 minutes.

I take in less than 200 grams of protein a day, but I time my protein intake and I get most of it from whole foods, limited fish and egg whites.

And what most people don’t know (other than my mastermind clients) is that my wife Di is a master at creating raw, vegan, whole, organic foods that actually taste great and are SUPER high in power nutrients.

In fact she’s got a blog called RealHealthyRecipes.com and she posts all of her killer creations on there. So I thought I’d share my five favorites with you.

Here they are…

1. Green Power Smoothie 2.0. Basically she blends a ton of spinach, kale, and wheat grass with Almond milk, hemp protein and some other cool stuff and that’s the first thing I drink every morning. Tastes REALLY good too.

2. Hash with home made baked beans… another one of my favorites. It’s hearty, taste good, and packed with good nutrients.

3. Whole Wheat Pretzels. Here’s the deal, I love pretzels and these ones are about as healthy as pretzels can get.

4. Favorite Spinach Salad. She named it this because when I ate this salad I said it was my favorite salad ever. Fire a slab of grilled salmon on there and you have serious muscle food (“put the foods in da muscles” just like Ronnie Colman!)

5. Di’s MacNut Cookies. Okay, you gotta live a little. No kidding these are the best white chocolate mac nut cookies ever. And they’re about as healthy as cookies can be. Eating these a couple times a year brings lots of joy to my life :)

So those are the top five vegan foods on my list. If you want to see a ton more options then check out Di’s blog at RealHealthyRecipes.com

The Macnut cookies are the best! I had at least 10 at your birthday party! I am going to get Jessica to make the rest of these and try them out.

Thanks for sharing,

Jeff

I feel like there is going to be a Bedros quiz soon!!!! Do you use protein powder?? I certainly eat a lotta Vegans. Might consider becoming more of a vegan after you and Craig B…. Cool beans.

So glad to hear that info about you. Super inspirational stuff. I wish more people knew that you can get strong and buff eating whole plant foods. Many people think that you’ve got to sacrifice health for muscle gain, which simply isn’t true. Great post.

Stephanie @ 2:23 pm

Great to hear about other vegans who are interested in fitness! I’ve been vegan for 2 years and I really feel great. There’s a group called the Organic Athlete which is a group of vegan athletes. Check it out.

The whole “I AM A VEGAN” thing, yet you eat eggs and fish? You’re not even a vegetarian! Bedros, if you’re “not really sure what that technically makes you, tell people you’re an omnivore. You can’t even claim that “whole foods” help you keep/put on mass since you eat fish and eggs!

I enjoy a lot of the ideas and knowledge you share with us, but the beginning of this post is inane. Kudos to you for eating healthy though.

I’m a vegan and about 95% raw… don’t eat animal products and eat 2x a day most of the time, 3x a day - once in a blue moon, and sometimes only once a day… depends how i’m feeling. By the way, I’m 5,8″ and keep a consistent weight of around 190-200 lbs. I’m 39, and in the best shape of my life with energy to burn all day every day, and just feel great. Don’t mean to brag, just want to debunk all of the so-called scientific myths that we need animal protein and that we have to take in tons of protein to build muscle. Nonsense… clean, whole foods is the way to go, atleast it is for me. Good stuff B

I have adopted what I call the 90% Vegan lifestyle and have dropped a considerable portion of body fat and feel great about it (“Cant out exercise a bad diet” I have once heard from Craig B). It is so hard to define the diet in the strictest senses. If you are vegetarian, you allow dairy. If you are vegan it can be to the extrema and may not takes into consideration of actual health value (only so much soy can really be healthy). to live totally organic is the one option that seems the most encompassing but can also be so much out of your control if you ever eat out… i have recently (this past year) started adopting this life style and have taken some flak if i ever say I am vegan, as I do allow some exceptions and some times choose organic depending on the situation and it is interesting how people who have pay least attention to there own diet are the first to identify when you do not stick to the strict vegan principals. Anyhow, I really appreciate hearing about how other guys have adopted a smiler eating lifestyle. It is good to know now that I have dropped some body fat, and am working on some lean mass that I can still reach my goals.

Bedros, I guess you are limiting the Tuna and Diet coke protein drinks now :)

Thanks for sharing your ‘secret sauce’ Bedros. And ignore those comments about semantics. Who cares what you call yourself (vegan, omnivore, or ogre) cuz you’re walking the walk and just setting an example that trainers need to live what they preach. (and I’m sure it’s Di’s cookies that give you your svelte figure and visible abs-ha! I’d be 300 lbs with those cookies around!)

Dale @ 9:49 am

I have converted to almost all raw vegan and it has changed my life for the better in so many ways

Nathan @ 4:42 pm

I love animals….they’re delicious :) There’s just something primal with killing and eating your food :p

As for semantics, that’s exactly why Precision Nutrition just calls it ‘Plant based diets’. There’s more sects of plant based eaters than are religions and as evidenced above get people just as riled up.

I’m going to have to cook up some of those pretzels, awesomeness

Great looking recipes Bedros. Will have to give them a try.

Thanks for sharing!!! I LOVE LOVE the green smoothie and have one almost every morning! It’s AWESOME!! I put ice, spinach, frozen blueberries, frozen strawberries, 1/2 banana, protein powder, almonds, and a little water in mine…but I will give hers a try for sure. Thanks for the new ideas. Will definitely start following Di’s blog!

James @ 1:46 pm
