The Airplane Story

Here I am at Underground Online Seminar sharing some deep client getting tactics

I hope you’re doing good and that your personal training business is kicking butt.

This past Monday I was flying back to Chino Hills from D.C. – a pretty long flight. Thankfully there was onboard internet on the plane which meant I could go through my in box and take care of several coaching clients.

So I found my seat, sat down, said hi to the fella seated next to me… did the obligatory small talk… and logged onto the onboard internet.

And that’s when things got weird.

When I logged on and opened my emails the first site I looked at was Female Fat Loss Over Forty – which belongs to Shawna Kaminski, one of my 100K info mastermind group members.

I was reading through her copy and checking out the changes she made when my seatmate asked if I was doing some online shopping.

I explained that I was actually looking over a client’s site.

That’s when he asked what I do.
I said I’m a business and marketing coach for fitness professionals.

He asked what that meant.

I explained that I teach fitness trainers how to grow their business, market online and off line, and create wealth and freedom.

I think he kinda got that because he then asked what it was I was looking at.

I explained to him that Shawna is a personal trainer who has helped a bunch of 40 something year old women get fit and lose fat and now she’s written an ebook and sells her fitness and fat loss info to 40 something year old women online and that I helped her create her site, copy, offers, price points, up sells, blog, blah, blah, blah…

And I finished up by telling him that I think it’ amazing that people sell stuff online, even while they sleep and wake up and have more money in their bank accounts.

He explained how he had been unemployed the last 15 months and finally got a job again appraising heavy machinery and that something like that could never be taught online.

That’s when things got even weirder.

In an attempt to help, I went to google and showed him how there are over 6,000,000 searches on google for “how to appraise machinery” and different variations of that search term.

I explained that if someone (HINT: like him) wanted to, they could create a course for people who want to become machinery appraisers.

That’s when he said: “yeah, but you probably need web and computer skills to make money online and you probably went to school to learn that stuff.”

I explained that you can easily outsource the web and “computer” work – which is what I do and further more, I actually dropped out of college.

Then he said: Yeah but you probably need a lot of money to buy the video and editing gear to shoot the product.

I explained that we created a multiple six figure generating info product with only a $149 flip cam purchased from Best Buy.

That’s when he said: Yeah, but it probably takes a good amount of start up capital to get an online business going.”

And I explained that you can create a website, product, and get a paypal shopping cart all for under $400 and that the name of the game is a quality product, traffic and conversion.

Then he said: “With the economy the way it is it’s probably not a good time to start business because most people are not into spending money right now.”

I explained to him how money is always in motion and that every minutes of every day people are buying things they want and need. And in fact my buddy Craig Ballantyne recently told me about a fitness info product that launched and within the first week did over $300K.

Again he went on to tell me why it wouldn’t work for him.

Why it was bad timing.

Why people in his niche are different.

Why, why, why, why, why…

That’s when I realized that not matter what I said and no matter the proof I show he’ll continue to look for reason (excuses really) to justify his beliefs – no matter how warped.

And that’s when I remembered this quote from Tony Robbins: “Changing our belief systems is central to making any real and lasting change in our lives.”

It all boils down to mindset, desire, and action.

Let me know what you think below in the comment section.

William @ 1:45 am

….some people aren’t happy unless they are unhappy…I don’t like negative energy so I try to stay away from those type of people….too bad you were stuck next to him for a few hours…That is when I would have went to my earbuds. Even if they arent plugged into anything people think they are and leave you alone…lol

Shawn Horwood @ 1:51 am

Man, it hurts to hear about people like that. I had people (some who I thought were good friends) telling me that I couldn’t start a business because I failed university (I was going for my marketing major) in my first year with a 0.5 GPA (I got kicked out - beat that!) and I was starting a business right when things were really bad and all over the news they were talking about the economy tanking and blah blah blah.

My “friends” told me that I was going to fail miserably and end up back at McDonalds (I worked there and was a manager at 16 - it was actually a fun job but I didn’t like the fact that I was basically an underpaid serial killer) and this stuff was never going to work.

Funny how I got a cheque in the mail for $250 that I didn’t even realize I had made, I made more money last week than my friends with full time jobs and I didn’t even work last week and I am a complete moron when it comes to computers.

It is all about mindset. I sold marketing products and there were some people I came across that told me that everything they tried didn’t work and they looked to me for help but when I offered it they basically said it probably wouldn’t work for them and I pretty much just gave up at that point.

One minute I had people telling me the stuff I taught them made them 2.5K in one day when they hadn’t made anything online before and the next I’d get someone asking for a refund because my stuff didn’t work.

It saddens me that people don’t achieve the success they could just because they have a bad attitude.

But, those who have a positive mindset and go for what they desire and never give up and find ways to make things happen will achieve great success.

Shawn

What a total defeatist! I have try to avoid those people as they bring me down with them energy vampires!

Great post Bedros. Thanks for sharing. I have friends just like this guy. Last year at Fitness Business Summit 09 one of the speakers (can’t remember his name) talked about giving those types of friends “the gift”. Ever since then I’ve been giving those friends the gift of good bye and it has helped my mindset tremendously. Can’t wait till FBS10!

Paul Schroer @ 2:56 am

You know Bedros, Either you are pulling your weight and you have hope that things will change for you with a deep seated inner thought process of “I will succeed” or you are blaming the entire world on your inactivity and therfore lack of success. America in order for us to change each of us have to change indepentantly first. All I do is help people help themselves by giving them the tools to succeed and letting them know that they, Themselves can really do this. Like any other Trainer I have my own faults but I choose to give positive feedback and in return The world gives me success in spite of my flaws. Well off to work and another great day. PS. I shoot all my videos on a Kodak digital camera and they work fine, and they are free!!

Dman @ 3:03 am

Hi Bedros, Awesome post!
The battle of the mind is where all victories are won and lost isn’t it. It totally sucks to be in the state of mind that guy was in AND to have wasted the chance to share a flight sitting next to you is just an outright CRIME. Anyway, this post has reminded me to be MEGA SHARP and ready to see opportunities around me and the good ol take action tip is where all the preparation and great ideas either are made or broken. No matter how hard the road gets we have to keep our belief that we have the ability to make things better, it seems that 15 months of unemployment left that guy so low on confidence he could not see the light even though you were shining a spotlight in his face. Keep up the good work Bedros !! You want to hear something really weird?? I had a dream I was being coached by you personally. I asked you if you realized the work you are doing keeps trainers doing what they love and making a living at the same time and that by doing that you were having an impact all the way to the many client’s lives who were being saved because their trainer wasn’t a statistic like all the trainers that have dropped out cause they needed to pay the bills and had never received adequate business training. I’m one of those trainers that was on the verge of calling it quits to put food on the table but you made me believe I could do what I was called to do while making a buck. Today I’m on my way towards doing my “own” thing. Gracias from Australia bro!! Hopefully one day that guy will wake up!

ross aubrey @ 3:20 am

It’s amazing how some people think. I was talking to a new client yesterday and she had this EXACT mindset. No matter how many ways I showed her the possibilities and used my story as proof, she had a reason why she couldn’t do the same. Having a strong, positive, and healthy mindset will literally change your life. Thanks for being awesome, Bedros. See you in a week!

sam @ 4:20 am

Wow B,
Thank God you have the patience. I would have put on my headphones a long time ago and pretended listening to music. What a crab.

Roberto @ 4:32 am

I was in the staff room at a gym where I do my freelance personal training the other, and there was this dude who I know is over 40, no car, lives with his parents, on minimum wage… telling one of the girls in the room why he’s a life guard on shit money… the reason….Because there aint no jobs out there at the minute, people dont dont want to take me on at my age blah blah blah

Unbelievable!

Steve Payne @ 4:34 am

Bedros,
Great story and lesson.

When Galileo, in an attempt to explain his findings on gravity in which objects of differing weights and sizes fell at the same rate, demonstrated this fact at the Leaning Tower of Piza, despite what the observers saw they did not believe.

For many people I think that changing their belief system is just to painful to do because they fear it means a dramatic shift in their paradigm, lifestyle and/or circle of influence. They might have to get out of that all important “circle of friends”.

Thanks for the reminder.

alan @ 4:54 am

Great post, as always, Bedros!!! Very true and very inspiring! Gotta go… I’m gonna do some research on “how to appraise machinery”… :)

Devin Burns @ 5:06 am

The definition of failure is never trying. The definition of success is getting up one more time than you fall down. People who think of a million reasons why they will fail will always fail. The people who think of a million and ONE ways to try it again are the ones who will always succeed.

Cory Schidler @ 5:11 am

Hey Bedros,

Your experience is a sad but true fact. Most people think the world is in the toilet. I just attended a Dan Kennedy seminar last night in Phoenix. He pointed out all of the negative headlines and everything bad that is going on in the U.S. right now. The perception of most Americans is that our economy and our nation is in shambles. However, Dan points out that there were 16% more Millionaires between 2008 and 2009. It seems to me that most Americans need to turn off the news, get out the door and find ways to create the economy they want.

Hi, Bedros

The one thing when I started in sells was that. In my vocabulary was the word “but”. I changed my mind set and thought pattern. And now after 12 years later. I have way to many friends! No, really people fell now that I have something to offer. That guy or those thinkers on the airplane.
I stay away from because they take all my energy. My clients want my help and I am so glad. That is why I enjoy the energy you bring to the fitness business Bedros. Thanks again Bro

Nate @ 5:15 am

Love it!

There are action takers and excuse makers. What are you going to be? This story is a perfect example.

It’s definitely a mindset. Thanks for sharing Bedros!

nancy @ 5:19 am

that’s very true. if you keep finding excuses it’s either because your scared of moving forward for some reason, you’re lazy because you don’t want to do the work, or possibly you really don’t know. that last one is a stretch. but i have encountered people who just don’t know and the worst is that they don’t even want to try to know so they try to get other people do it for them. but it seems to me that it is more lazy and scared. anything and everything can be found online. there are numerous ways to get the info that you need from fellow colleagues, magazine sources, even talking to your own manager. you really can’t say you can’t do it unless you try and if you tired and still can’t do it then you didn’t really work at trying. bottom line!

you produce great posts. love reading your work.

rich chessario @ 5:25 am

Awesome post! I’ve wanted to get going on-line for 6 years but had many of the same excuses/doubts this guy did, now I think it was really just fear of getting out of my comfort zone and lack of desire. The free content you give away is amazing..just got the “go givers sell more” yesterday and am bursting with excitement for fbs ’10! Can’t wait to meet you.

John Thompson @ 6:08 am

You tell him B!

That guy will be broke and depressed his entirely life if he doesn’t change his belief system. I’m glad I learned not to make excuses and become a massive action taker like my buddy Bedros.

Thanks,

John

Jason Woodard @ 6:15 am

Thanks Bedros,
I see this all the time and I thank you for all your support. The more potential clients we meet which is what this guy is the more we realize why some people make it and others don’t. These stories remind us all how important it is to put your head down and not look Up until you cross the finish line , unless of course to read your blog haha. Seriously I hope you got his numbe poor boy needs ya:)

Eyad @ 6:35 am

WoW great story!!! And i agree, some people put themselves on self destruct, they have excuses for everything, because they are too lazy to change their lives. Some people simply lack the capacity of thinking outside the box! They follow other peoples paths and never make their own. Some people cant see whats right in front of them or they just don’t want to see it!

These are energy vampires, if they do this to themselves, imagine what they would do to you!!!

STAY AWAY!!!! haha

Shawna Kaminski @ 7:02 am

Man Bedros, it was that guy’s lucky day to sit next to you and get your thoughts. I hope he thinks about it and TAKES ACTION, cuz you’ve been right about every step you’ve advised me to take and I don’t regret a single one. BTW, thanks for mentioning me in your story and can’t wait to hear any more ideas you may have to improve my business. See you in Vegas and then again at the Summit!

Jason Muir @ 7:10 am

Great post
That is too bad that he didn’t realize a chance to move forward even when it was shown and explained to him. Thanks for the post. Helps me remember to keep things moving.

Ollie @ 7:56 am

Great post,
I really like how this shows how you’ve just got to get out their and do it, one exuse just leads to another.

Steve de la Torre @ 8:43 am

Hey Bedros!
Another excellent post! Ever since I joined FBBC I’ve increased my revenue 25% and am curretly implementing my marketing plan which will double by income, all in about 2 and half months. Half of that credit goes to the actual ideas i got from you the other half goes to just being associated with you and all the other heavy hitters that follow you. I’m a firm believer that just by being associated with winners you dramatically increase your chances of bein succsful! Thanks for everything!

Rich @ 8:47 am

That was a painful story to read. Actually, agonizing. Guess I was hoping for a happily ever after where he asked you to help him get his in line business started.
Great work pointing this out. All the best.

Blake @ 8:51 am

I really like that post Bedros, you make an extremely good point. It’s always and only the mindset one has. My Mom always gives me this one “where you are is exactly where you want to be.” Everybody always stays into their comfort zone, to make new neuropathways you need to break out. Preaching to the choir when it comes to you though. lol.

Also I noticed that what we think is not reality, I call it “YOURALITY.” When we take the action, it is never as bad as we think it is.

You rock, Bedros. I love that even though you have so much money, and even though you could live a great life and not work ever again, (seemingly so) you still make time out of your life to put up these extremely inspiring and motivational blogs up for us.

That is true selflessness!!

DALE CARNEGIE would be proud!!

Thomas @ 8:54 am

That is some good stuff!!! What a business mind. You know how to make things simple and are truly out to help people. You’re a good guy.

Marilyn @ 9:08 am

I didn’t know my ex-husband was on his way to Chino Hills last week, but I’m so sorry you had to sit next to him! (I have no idea if it was or wasn’t him, but I sure have heard that story). BTW - the hardest thing to come to grips with as a personal trainer was that sometimes I get clients who are like that guy, except they have actually paid the money for personal training, but then don’t actually do it. This would be fine if they just didn’t show up - money for doing nothing. But, it’s when they do show up, take an hour of my time, and whine the entire session about why they just “can’t” do it, no matter what it is. (and this is without any medical issues present). They all eventually leave, telling the world how it wasn’t any good, etc. Fortunately, I learned to recognize them, and don’t give them any credence anymore. In fact, as a learning experience, I now pass them off to my apprentice instructors so they can learn how to deal with this personality as well.

thanks for the post!

Mike Murphy @ 9:55 am

Sometimes you’ve just gotta go for it! That’s what I did…made a no-startup business plan for my personal training and two years in, about to gross six figures per year with 3 trainers working under me.

jin @ 10:25 am

jeez, sounds like one of my close friends.
these people always seem to have some kind of retaliation to the ‘answer’. they expect someone to fly over a secret pamphlet that will give them millions of start up capital and a guaranteed success protocol that they can make money off of without putting in effort.

i cant hate though, i was one of them at a certain point

Robin Lopez @ 10:43 am

No risk-taker there. What he didn’t realize, he was placed in that seat for a reason. Some people just don’t get it. You have such a passion for helping people succeed, I like how you went right into your schpill and didn’t put on the earplugs.

Great story! Robin

Char @ 11:05 am

Fear is a funny thing huh? It holds us back, and when we live in the ‘fear’, it is very dark, so we can’t see the light. I am currently in start-up mode, this story reminded me of why I chose this path! Thanks for the pep talk Bedros!!!

Sara Hutniak @ 11:27 am

Hey Bedros,

The info you offered your seat mate was GOLD, yet he still found excuses to knock every point down. Too bad, so sad.

Instead of Snakes on Planes, this episode could be titled Crabs on Planes. Let him stay in his bucket. Thanks for the post.
-Sara

Jacob Mcluskie @ 11:47 am

So true, i hope that guy enjoys appraising machinery!

Thanks Bedros!

Jenny May @ 1:29 pm

people will put more energy into justifying their beliefs then simply changing their beliefs…

Thanks Bedros!

Great post Bedros. All of his points are actually legitimate concerns, but he used each one as an excuse to not take action, while you found a solution to each one so you could take action. Attitude makes all the difference.

Dale @ 3:02 pm

Bedros,
Great story. I have been self employed for most of my adult life, since 1986, and I always here the same things even from my friends LOL
Dale

perry mosdromos @ 3:56 pm

Bedros
Jeez you have described the people who just drive me crazy. Its the people that pay me to train them and set them up with an eating plan, never make their appts, eat like crap and wonder why nothing works. Theres always an excuse that follows a weigh in.
Its all about mindset. When you want something bad enough only then will you strive to achieve it.
People with excuses just drive me insane. “Idont have time, I dont have money, I cant do that, I cant do this…etc etc.
Yet they will find the time to watch their favorite tv show, eat their junk food even if it means they have to drive for miles, and so on.
I always ask my clients if they consider themselves winners or losers. Inevitably they always answer that they are winners. It is then that I tell them that winners dont make excuses they take action.

Terrence Thomas @ 4:22 pm

Bedros,

You showed great patience in that exchange. After the second or 3rd “but”, I would have put on my headphones. LOL.. Great stuff.

Daniel Munday @ 4:51 pm

Too many yeah buts and not enough yeah you’re rights.

March 19, 2010

TC @ 2:52 am

Hey Bedros
From your post, it’s not hard to understand why so many people never achieved the kind of stuff they want in life. Thanks again for the awesome post!

Sarah @ 10:07 am

This an awesome post! I do love that you took the time to go through all his objections and showed that they could all be overcome if the will was there. I had a caller do that to too and I spent 30 minutes trying to talk this guy into being a personal trainer (which he already was) then realized what you said- it’s all about them, nothing said will change that. Thanks Bedros

Daniel @ 1:41 pm

Bedros, is that the end of the story?

Did he wise up, or give up, or what happened? This reminds me of the movie the ‘Princess Bride’ when the narrator(grandpa) would just stop telling the story right before the good stuff.:-)

I haven’t made it big yet, but I’m not giving up. The greatest failure is not trying followed closely by not getting back up when we fall.

Keep up the good stuff…and what happened?

:-)

Bedros @ 1:46 pm

Daniel, yep that’s the end of the story. I put my ear buds in and got to work.

Adelaide Personal Trainers @ 9:18 pm

That’s a cool story and so true mate…

People will always have excuses and really, what can you do for them? They are the ones that need to change and like this really cool quote from Jim Rohn - “All change starts with you. What do you need to change?”, it indeed must start with the person involved, dude on the airplane case in point.

It’s like the whole weight loss thing, I mean how hard is it really? It’s like being in debt, overspend (overeat) and you wind up in debt (fat), but of course there are so many reasons why it just can’t happen for them.

Although it’s disappointing to hear someone be negative with no belief in opportunity or possibility, the world does need that role to be played. If everyone was super open minded and confident in their potential, then people like Bedros, Chris, Steve, and Craig wouldn’t be as inspiring for their bravery and percerverence. It would be hard to be a business owner and delegate to others, if everyone was an entrepenuer. The world needs owners, managers, grunt workers, and whiny complaining excuse making dead beats. It balances things out. I sort of paraphrased that example from “How to be Rich” by J. Paul Ghetty.

Fitness Guy @ 6:19 am

Wow, great post! I always thought that I was a bit of a procrastinator and I am but I have only been able to build an online business from the faith that I knew that there are always buyers looking for stuff on the internet for their particular niche.

Although everyone made excuses around me about how difficult it is to make money in diet and fitness or how tough the competition is and even seeing the look on my wifes face when she was disouraged for me I kept pushing until I got my first check from Google for $100. After that things picked up quickly and three years later I have a nice stable income online.

There are always excuses but if you can be confident I am sure anyone can make a go of it online. Thanks for the reminder that for some people their head makes it not an option.
