Five Fitness Marketing Tips I Got From Tucker Max

Posted on May 23, 2009 By Bedros

coffeebeanI’m sitting in a Coffee Bean coffee shop off Sunset Blvd in Hollywood writing this blog post.

I’m not much on Hollywood… to many weirdo’s and way too congested… but we (Chris McCombs and I) spent the entire day here along with our camera crew interviewing Tucker Max for Project ALPHA - now known as “Add To Cart” a full feature internet marketing documentary

really a documentary on the subculture of Internet marketing, blogging, the thought leaders, and the weird, wacky, and colorful niche markets that exist on the Internet.

*** Side note *** If you want to know more about this movie we’re working on and the day to day shoots, happenings and hijinx just go to www.AddToCartMovie.com and subscribe to the newsletter.

tuckermaxI wont be talking about the documentary much here because this blog and the content here is all about YOU and YOUR fitness business and showing YOU how to get more clients, profits, and freedom.

So if you want to know what I’m up to and keep up with the documentary (which we’re submitting to Sundance) then follow along at www.AddToCartMovie.com.

So while hanging out with Tucker Max and sitting through his funny interview this is what I took away… Five Fitness Marketing Tips From Tucker Max

1. If you’re not passionate about your market, business and the people you serve then find a new niche. When you LOVE what you do the money just comes.

I can attest to that… I love coaching and consulting fitness professionals. I am one, it’s my passion and its what I was put on this earth to do. And because of that the money just comes.

2. Take risks that others wont. Tucker sent his manuscript to over one thousand publishers. He got zero response but he believed in his idea and continued to do what he loved. Now he’s got one of the top blogs in the world, he’s on NY Times bestseller list (currently # 2 on the list) and his book was just made into a movie.

streak3. Create your own niche. This was a killer take away that Tucker shared. His whole thing is this; why go into a niche and compete with others when you could create your own niche, your own market and DOMINATE? That’s what he did.

Brilliant, right?

4. Blog with no filters. This was a HUGE take-a-way too and something I practice all the time. People want the unfiltered truth. They don’t want watered down, emotionless crap, or sterile dialogue that’s boring and blah!

5. Content is king. The fastest and easiest way to get people to find your blog and keep coming back is to give them REAL content that they can’t find anywhere else and that they want to read.

On the other hand the fastest way to create a disconnect and to drive traffic AWAY is to give lousy content that people can find anywhere with one simple Google search.

Chris and I are going to be interviewing some of the WORLD’S BIGGEST Internet marketers over the next couple of weeks…

what questions would you want us to ask these world class Internet marketing experts for you?

Nii Wilson @ 2:51 pm

This was a good post Bedros.

Sometimes people often overlook the basics. The basics is the foundation to take you to the next level. I truly can’t wait until “Add to Cart” comes out. Have a great weekend my man.

PEACE

p.s.- I see you are going with the Wolverine hairdo…not bad

I on the other hand need hair club for men…lol

Kaiser @ 3:11 pm

Yeah loved that interview man -

Love Tucker’s take on the importance of content -

With all the FU-SCHNIKEN, KUN FU NINJA marketing tactics, good ol fashioned quality content and honesty gets lost in the equation -

And then people wonder why their shit sucks and no one reads it -

Good reminder -

And keep rollin’ with ADD TO CART - hope to tag along to a few shoots when I come out next month!

Joe Petersen @ 3:40 pm

Bedros you ROCK !!!! I attended Summit 08 and it changed my life. I changed my company name to a more marketable, brandable name. I changed my tactics and the entire direction of where I was taking my fitness business.I may not be the only one in my market, but I am the one who cares the most, works the hardest and relentlessly strives to be the best !!!! Thanks for all that you do. Continued blessings and success to you and yours

Lisa @ 3:59 pm

This is great Bedros…You are always up to something great to help us out!
I am thinking about a blog and curious: are blog contests a good way to get more subscribers? and or/ what are the best ways to increase subscribers?
Thanks for all tips! You rock!
Lisa ;o)

Bedros,

Your project sounds real awesome, a totally new experience for both you & Chris.

I have a million things I’d like to ask these internet marketers, though I think the main one would be to ask how much of their ‘dream lifestyle’ is really true?

Are their membership sites really bringing that autopilot revenue? Or is there major attrition?

How much work and how many employees go into their ‘million dollar days’? (I saw Mike Filsaime eating take-out chinese with a whole bunch of employees on a ustream during his last launch)

Is their current success really making them ‘happy’ and ‘fulfilled’ (compare it to the end of ‘the Game’ where it turns out all the PUAs got depressed by not having achieved happiness even though they mastered pickin up chicks)

…..also - I forgot to ask this to Vince Del Monte at FBS…how do they see the future of Internet Marketing? (Is the opt-in box dead?)

You guys probably already asked these…..either way - those are some of the questions I’d like to see answered on the FASCINATING world of Internet Marketing.

Chris Kerth @ 5:07 pm

I have a gym that is 1600 sq ft packed with equipment packed in fairly tight and not much available floor space. I want to grow the boot camp business but also want to be aware of the members who want a t. Can you give me any suggestions? I have moved some of the boot camp outside.
Also, I am considering renting additional available space which is 75 feet outside the back of my existing gym. I am not sure how that will work. Any suggestions?

steve @ 5:42 pm

Bedros,

Great post… I think point 1 in your post is really the key.. The money will flow.., IF YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO…. I think if you have a STRONG DESIRE for something and willing to take ACTION then other Ideas and opportunities (if your conscious of them- such as the ones below) are more likely to present themselves…., esp if you look f

Marisa Wandeler @ 6:00 pm

Great Project, Bedros.

I’d like to ask these gurus, how do you stay ahead of the internet marketing game? How do your techniques, strategies, and ideas NOT become obsolete overnight in an industry that seems to be changing at lightning speeds?

AND, I’d like to know- what’s the best, most efficient, way to keep your knowledge base growing? It seems that everyone wants and claims to be an expert, yet takes completely different approaches to their everyday web strategies. I realize that it’s probably best to know everyone’s approach and then take action on what I think is best, but, honestly, who has the time to sit and read 25 guys blogs everyday or research the latest statistics on SEO to stay informed and current.

I’d like to be a fly on the wall at all of these interviews, the whole culture fascinates and frustrates me. So much information, so many choices, so many strategies….. my head is spinning.

mitchell Lee @ 6:11 pm

Bedros, I have watched your close clients dvd 4 times thru already. love it

question - how do you and steve get that optin box with your pic behind it? is that the power of semiologic?

what steps does one take to get it to look like that?

also, in general would you recommend semiologic?

Bedros @ 6:42 pm

Hey everyone… thanks for all the support and comments. Chris and I are taking “Add To Cart” to the Sundance Film Festival and hopefully the big screen (almost guaranteed).

For those of you have technical comments about the opt in boxes on this page and stuff.. hang in there… I’ll ask Pete, my bro in-law and the tech dude behind all of our cool sites and prodcuts to chime in.

Pete! Can you hear me? Pete… are you there? Hello? LOL

B

Pete @ 9:03 pm

Hey Mitchell,

Great question. You can put an optin box like that on any blog (not just a semiologic blog). It’s basically just a box floating on top of the site with a background image. If you want all the nerdy details just send me an email: peteshilling (at) hotmail.com

I definitely recommend semiologic. It makes optimizing all the back end stuff on your site for SEO quick and painless. You still have to make a custom design for your site, get links pointing to your site, etc, but it is a great starting point.

If anyone has any techy questions just leave a comment, I read them all :) .

mike g @ 9:42 pm

Great post as always. The question I would ask the experts is once you have created a niche for yourself, how can you drive more people to your website so they can see what types of services you have to offer? I have been struggling with this for some time now. Thanks for any adice you can give.

Kaiser Serajuddin @ 11:03 pm

Haha - Michael asking the hard questions - yeah Bedros, your project does read a lot like THE GAME by Neil Strauss - I wonder what the conclusions will come out to be on this one - whether this IM stuff is all it’s cracked up to be - I’ve got my opinions, but I’ll let the masters do their work …

Adam Toohey @ 12:09 am

Hey Bedros,

The Big Screen huh? That’s awesome man… BIG congrats to you and Chris… I cannot wait to see the full feature doc on this one. As usual these a re really solid tips that can be implemented straight away.

The big one that is so true is NICHE… if you are not right into the one you are in now… get a new one. I have worked some things out for myself when it comes to niches and what my goals and ambitions are moving forward and it is very exciting…

Certainly have your good self to thank for that mate. Truly appreciate all you do here, at your events and in the fitness world in general.

All the best for the rest of Add To Cart Movie and I look forward to seeing it on the big screen..

Cheers

Adam Toohey

Man Bedros…the basics always rule!

And then there’s the “make your own niche” thing.

Uhh oh…

Dononvan “DFitnessguy” Owens

Adam Toohey @ 12:12 am

P.S. The New Pic of you on here is 100% better IMO than your first. I vote the shaggy top over the very shaved look

AT

Bedros @ 2:06 am

@Adam, yeah man the hair seems to work for everyone. Funny thing is the only reason I started shaving it is because 13 years ago I couldn’t afford a consistent hair cut…and then it just stuck.

@Donavan, Make your own niche. That one is HUGE. That’s exactly what I’ve done in the fitness industry (No one else makes software) and that’s what we’re doing with the documentary.

@Kaiser, you should see what mad stuff I have planned over the next 2 months. The fitness industry will forever change… stick with me on this… its going to be a fun ride.

THANK YOU ALL for the comments and feedback!

Bedros

mitchell Lee @ 10:35 am

thank you Bedros and Pete - ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY

Pete, I will be emailing you for the nerdy details and Bedros -

thanks for over delivering and leading me in the right direction. I am so grateful

TO ALL WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT BUYING THIS GUYS STUFF - YOU MUST!

Steve Auxier @ 1:23 pm

Thank you for all of your inspiring interviews!

Adam Toohey @ 2:45 pm

Bedros,

Mate you have come a hell of along way from not being able to afford a consistent haircut.

Totally grateful for everything you do for us mate and really a big congratulations on how you have shaped your life over those last 13 years.

Agreed to that the making your own niche bit is HUGE…

You of course have done it as you mention and the results truly show.

What’s the word on Orlando for October mate? You still going to run FIS with all the interviewing etc you got goin on over the next cpl months?

Cheers mate

AT

Bedros @ 4:04 pm

@ AT yes, Fitness Info Summit is still on for October (don’t have the date memorized, sorry) in Orlando. I’ve got an awesome crew… we can make a full feature doc and pull off a live event.. I hope …lol

More details to come on FIS in July.

Linda Juranich @ 1:36 pm

Bedros,
You’re marketing information makes such sense! No BS just get real and do what you love and it’ll happen.
My partner and I are still new at the game but grab onto all of your information and try to make it happen.
I think one of the most important is to find your niche! We’re
constantly defining it. Not easy but trying to zero in on it as much as possible.
Thanks again and keep sending the helpful information!
