Don’t Fear Failure, Fear Regret

Posted on November 21, 2009 By Bedros

I was driving to Keuilian HQ the other day when I heard an interesting news broadcast on the radio.
old_man
Apparently there was a big birthday gathering happening out here in LA for a bunch of folks over the age of 100… and the radio station had sent a reporter to interview some of the guests of honor.

The reporter asked the old timers what their secret was for living to such a ripe old age.

One lady said to live each day as though it was the only one given to you.

And this old guy said… and I quote: “lots of booze, late nights, and women”

I couldn’t stop laughing my ass off!

You know what I got out of that fifteen-second news clip?

1. Don’t get old.
2. Don’t get old and have regrets.

You can tell by both of their answers that these folks don’t have regrets.

Tony Robins has this little test in one of his books called the “rocking chair test”.

It’s where you imagine yourself old and gray, sitting on a porch somewhere in a rocking chair.

Knowing what you know today will you have any regrets?regret

Will you regret never starting that business?

… or not getting out of your comfort zone when you had the chance?

… or not taking that world cruise or living in another country?

… or not getting up in front of that audience?

… or not approaching that guy or girl you got your eye on?

… or not dumping that dead end job that’s actually holding you captive?

… or not skydiving, swimming with sharks, running with the bulls, or whatever crazy adventure rocks your boat.

See most people fear failure so much that they’re willing to deal with the bullshit circumstance they’re in.

F that!

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be in that rocking chair laughing at my past failures and glowing about my successes rather than being bitter with regret wondering what may have happened if only I had pulled the trigger and made that one decision.
regretnothing
You gotta live your dream!

Don’t let others tell you what your dream should be or why it’s such a bad idea. What the hell do they know?

Get out of your comfort zone and do something!

Make that decision that you know you should because failure is temporary but REGRET is forever.

Give yourself the “rocking chair test” right now. Are you feeling any regrets?

Amazing Bedros… I’m just sitting in my chair on Sunday morning reading your post and listening to my favorite choon. “Meet me half way” by the Black eyed peas.

A mixture of the both has just kick started my ass into gear and get on with something I’ve been putting off.

Keep up the brillaint work,

I would be a millionairre now. I do regret fukn my credit all up and not going to college and just living a normal live. But I got skills that know I have ever met has and they are from me working in so many places I hate that I refuse to work for anyone and from just my GOD given talent of sales. I am the best P.T. sales man I have ever met. I $175k in one month! Thats a number and I keep selling at a high volume. SICK! I need credit to get my own studio or I would wipe out the competition. Looking for investors.

Bedros,

I too would have hosed at that comment on radio.. great stuff

I gotta tell ya I took Regret to School… and what I mean by that is before coming over here to the Northern Hemisphere I remember bein scared… I had ZERO certainty anything was going to workout but I knew that it was a MUST… that if I didn’t do it.. I would always wonder why? Regret was something I was not going to accept or live with.

Make conscious choices and decisions NOW (even if they do seem a little crazy) so you leave absolutely no room for regret. AND… even better - take the damn word out of your vocabulary and you will not experience it. More on this later :)

Thanks B

Cheers

Thanks for the reminder to step out of the comfort zone. A little fear is a good thing, but you’re right-regret is out of the question. Jump in!

Great Post Bedros! I Love it when you do these types of posts on Sunday to help me start off my week with a Success Mindset! The more I immerse myself into the most important things in my business and the more I read about the most successful people in the world this always comes up! You have to have the Mindset for Success and having No Regrets is definitely part of that. I’m right in the middle of “Feel the Fear…and Do it Anyway” By Susan Jeffers and she talks about how making any major decision you have to view it as “No-Lose” because either way you will be growing when you make decisions and you become more powerful and confident with each one you make!

Thanks Bedros!

Awesome Bedros!

Years ago my family and friends all told not to give up my job for a career in personal training, they all said that i would struggle to make it work…. now 5 years later, im a fully booked personal trainer with 2 studio’s and 7 guys working for me and next year i will be opening 3 more studio’s in other cities in the UK. Well certainly no regrets there, but there would of been if i’d listened to my friends and family 5 years ago!

If you want something then go for it! How’s the saying go… “Always do what you’ve always done and you’ll always get what you’ve always got”

David Carter @ 9:51 am

Thanks Bedros, I needed that. I’m going through Tony’s Personal Power right now, and I’m constantly trying to get myself motivated to DO, and to ACT, and one of the things I use to reinforce the right mindset or state is constantly reading your blog and Steve’s.

Thank you both so much. You’re all inspirations that a ADD college drop out gym rat can get his act together and do something INCREDIBLE!!!

Thanks Again,
Dave

JJ Robertson @ 10:06 am

Knew that was Robbins as soon as soon as I heard rocking chair.

I also like to think of Mel Gibson in Braveheart when he was giving the speech in full battle gear. Good to YouTube that. Kinda modern day rocking chair!!!

Thanks Bedros!!!!!!

Man I failed Big Time about 5 years ago. Where where you then Bedros?!?!

It was the Best Learning I could have wanted. I did the exact opposite of Bedroism. Bedroism = bedros philosophy….,,

Jin @ 5:14 pm

I too will be laughing at my past failures, not regrets.

My rocking chair is going to be reeeeally nice btw

No regrets here man. Live and learn. Gotta get out there and do it for yourself because Life doesn’t care about your problems,it’s gonna kick your ass if you don’t get off of it and make it happen.

Temecula Personal Trainer @ 12:26 pm

Best post Bedros. I’m old enough now to have pletty of regrets, but that wouldn’t do any good. So instead of regret, learn and apply.

Chris Chan @ 12:05 pm

Loving the article, I had a career in music couple years ago and I completely lost interest and wanted to focus on my sports side with personal training. My distance family thought I was stupid to change career. But now I’m very busy personal trainer and prove them wrong.
