Autopsy of Marketing a Fitness Boot Camp

Posted on April 22, 2009 By Bedros

steveLast Friday me and my wife went out with the McCombs and the Hochmans. And just like the time we went bowling – my wife and I schooled them at miniature golf :-)

But that’s not what this post is about…

On hole 12 of the mini golf course (by this point I was leading by like five points) I asked Steve if he had run any cool marketing campaigns for his six fitness boot camps recently and he told me about the postcard campaign he had tested and the little tricks he had discovered that got him a bunch of traffic.

So I asked Steve to do an “autopsy” video on marketing a fitness boot camp with postcards - and here it is!

Good basic tips..we also use the 2 free weeks with our ads and post cards..another good point is the survey! an absolute must!!…you need to find out what works or what YOUR clients want(not what you think they need and not what works for others)..give them what they want and the marketing technique will work:)

Alexander Morentin @ 3:49 pm

Hey Steve,
No wonder you’re so successful.
You’re a marketing maniac!

Thanks for sharing the post card and breaking it down for us.

Luke Wold @ 4:00 pm

Yo Steve!

Killer vid bro. Do you leave these postcards in the offices of the people who are partnering with you? Or do you place them somewhere else?

I’m friggin’ FIRED UP for the Summit! See you there!

Thanks man!

Good stuff….red, white and blue!
I live in Canada and those colors still work in my ads!

A little bit of yellow works too, but too much makes it look like a skittles ad! lol

anyways, thanks for the great info and keep them coming!

alberto @ 4:29 pm

Great stuff. I like the tip on copy doodles.com

How much do you spend on the postcards?

And do you prefer a specific vendor that you
recommend?

Now do you mail them out to a certain geographic area
or do you leave them in businesses?

Kaiser @ 5:21 pm

Great autopsy here Steve - Those little things like using the Stop Sign and the clear stand are awesome nuggets that a lot of trainers and boot camp instructors may second guess - Haven’t seen a post quite like this, so great work -

Hey Steve i hope all is well. I just want to say i love your enthusiasm and your wit my brother. You Rock !!! Thanks for the advice keep it coming. I have a quick question for you. How do you structure your boot camps for those who come back? Do you charge them the same price as the first time?

One word…EXCELLENT!

Donovan “DFitnessguy” Owens

Awesome stuff Steve!

Lots of gems there I can use for future sales copy.

and finally I know where sites get those copy doodles!

Thanks, keep up the great content!

Awesome content…1 suggestion…

For some reason trainers struggle to spell “lose” and “losing”

Loose is like “My pants are loose.”

Sorry for being a prick :)

keep up the good work steve and bedros

Casey G

That is so cool that you show all the details and say go ahead and copy, and with your best post card.
Thanks

Steve Hochman @ 9:30 pm

Casey…LOL

Ya.. I caught that after they were printed.
The good news is, when you have a targeted marketing peice,
type-o’s don’t seem to keeep people from signing up :)

Good eye though

Steve

Steve Hochman @ 9:36 pm

Nigel,
Not sure exactly what you mean by come back…
I sign prospects up, give them the first two weeks free to remove the risk, then keep them on an ongoing auto debit program.

hope that helps
Steve

Alberto,

It’s a couple hundred bucks per 1000 and I get businesses to display them using my “Business referral network mind control method”

Good stuff as always….maybe I’m wrong but I smell something IMMENSE coming at FBS

Bedros and Steve you guys are a crazy DYNAMIC DUO (no tights or crazy costumes necessary) just wanted to say I was reading this blog post at like 4AM NYC time because I had trouble sleeping and wanted to say Steve thanks and I greatly appreciate all the “meat and potatoes” information you give away

I am in the process of making new fliers and in the past have created some fliers that just bombed.

Thanks for giving the exact formula on what is working for you.

Bedros I am not sure if you still do it but the swipe file that you offered with your close clients DVD was a big help also. If people didn’t get it they are insane. I think I got that like right after the sales page went up.

Wish I could be going to Cali but I hope you will be back in NYC soon and hopefully we can meet from there.

Have a great one and take it easy guys.

peace,

Nii

Mike @ 10:23 am

Steve great stuff. What if you are brand new and have no before and after photos for your web site or post cards?
Thanks,
Mike

Chase @ 11:53 am

Hey Steve

Just wondering..Do you make up names for the people you put on the postcards?

As on your postcard the woman is named Patty..as I am guessing the statement “Patty lost 55 pounds” corresponds to the picture right above it.
But on your web site the same woman is showned and there is a different name.

jose @ 2:31 pm

What is the best way to go about finding a facility to host indoor bootcamps?

Currently I am calling around to facilities like martial arts and cheer leading places because they have large rectangular rooms that I can fit many people into for the classes. And these places tend not to have morning classes (so they have free space available). However I am running into a lot of interference from the owners. You would think that with the current economy, these places would be happy to get help with the rents, but I am having communications problems (martial arts places) and a distinct lack of interest from most of the owners - they just don’t want to be bothered from what I can tell - insurance issues (got that covered), they are worried about cleaning up (or having to have the place clean when I get there) and having to have a person at the location when I am there (trust issues here - they could just give me a key).

What is the best way to pay for the use of the facilities?

I’m in the classic catch 22 here. I don’t have any bootcamp clients because I don’t have a facility so I don’t know what I can really afford. I’m trying to work it out such that I don’t have to pay a standard rent like $50 per hour of usage or $1500 per month. So I am trying to get a percentage split. How much is a good split now and later when I am more successful? I am planning to offer free memberships like Steve Hochman suggests upfront to get human billboards and two week free trials as well. So I could have a bunch of people using the facility and no revenue for a while. This situation doesn’t seem to sit well with the folks I am talking with.

Thanks for all your help,
Charles

Hi Charles, I think the best thing for you to do is to enjoy and bebefit from the free content we have up here. And then take advantage of Fit Body Bootcamp when we open it up in July. It will solve all of the challenges you listed.
