How To Be A Productive Boss

Today, I want to talk to you about time management, productivity, and how you can get a lot more stuff done, specifically by changing the way you approach your day.

We’re not going to talk about any self-sabotage, the odd association that you might have with money, or any other reasons why you don’t get stuff done.

What I want to talk to you about is whether you are truly ready to get stuff done and make more money.

Maybe you want to improve your lifestyle or your health. How do you do it?

Look, we all have 24 hours in a day. The fact of the matter is that more productive people get a lot more done than the rest of the crowd.

Yes, there’s a reason for that.

I’m going to share those secrets with you, and it’s up to you whether you do anything about it. You could just keep hanging out on Facebook or watching the next YouTube video while nothing gets done. In the meantime, time is going to tick by, and before you know it, you’re a year older, further away from your goals than you ever were.

Now, I hope that’s not going to be you. I want to draw that pain out of every person I mentor; if you just sit on the bleachers and don’t get in the game and play ball, you’ll be further away from your goals a year from now.

For you to get there, you have to be pretty doggone productive.

Now, most people tell me, “I don’t have time.” I think that’s the biggest lie ever.

Today, you should have more time than ever with the technology we have.

So, thing number one is to find your magic time.

My good friend Craig Ballantyne talks about your magic time and what it is. Your magic time are those two to three hours of the morning, in the evening, or in the middle afternoon where you’re most creative and have the most energy.

That’s when you want to power down everything around you that’s insignificant and dive into your to-do list.

For me, my magic time is in the mornings, specifically between 7 AM and about 10 AM. That’s when I get a lot of things done and move my business, my life, and my ambitions ahead.

After that, I can go workout. I can come to my office and hang out. I can do whatever I want, and I don’t feel the pressure of the day bearing down on me.

The second tip to remember is to work off a list.

The list has to be made the night before, because if you think you’re going to wake up and jot down a list of four or five things you need to do today, it’s not going to happen.

You’ve got to do it the night before.

Now for me, I’ll typically put anywhere from four to six things on my list. It could be as simple as filming a video for you. It could be as big as going on a lunch meeting for the next two hours and working out a big deal.

Anything that I do goes on my list.

Say I have three phone calls in one day. Then, I’ll batch process.

That’s the number one mistake a lot of people make. If I have six things to do on my list, and three of those six things are phone calls to Rob, Mike, and Bob, shouldn’t I just batch process and do those three phone calls back-to-back? Your mind operates better that way.

But instead, most people will do one thing, then they’ll call Bob. Then they’ll do another thing, and then they’ll call Rob. Then they’ll do another thing, and then they’ll call Mike. That’s a very inefficient way of operating.

When you have a list, guess what goes at the very top? It has to be the hardest, scariest thing that you don’t want to do.

Get it done, because once you do, you won’t procrastinate and put off the rest of your list.

Psychologically, people have a hang-up with doing the hard stuff. People find any reason to waste time and do busywork – not productive work – just so they never get to those tough things.

Put the hardest thing first on your list. They don’t teach you that in college.

There is one other thing that you can do: learn to say “no” more often.

Now, if you’re an entrepreneur or have big dreams and visions, you probably are an idea person. The problem with idea people is they can go down a rabbit hole of ideas and never get any one thing done.

Someone might have all these half-baked ideas that sound good. Maybe they even have next moneymaking idea. Sadly, they never get it done. light-brain-300x214-MoQa7x.jpg

You’ve got to learn to say “no” more often, to your ideas and to other people’s ideas.

There’s nothing worse than someone coming up to someone and saying, “This is what you should do because you’d be good at it.”

I remember once seeing a really tall kid in the gym, maybe 13/14 years old. Now all these kids were playing basketball. Everybody would walk up to this 6’2”ish kid and say, “Hey kid. You know you’d be good at basketball. You should play basketball.”

I often wonder what happened to that kid.

You can tell that people would walk up to that kid and encourage him to play basketball simply because he was tall. Who knows if he had any hand-eye coordination, speed, or jumping ability? Nobody cares.

But if all these people give him the wrong idea, and if he decided to go with that wrong idea, he’s probably suffering through life right now doing something he doesn’t want to do. In reality, maybe he’d be an amazing attorney or a stellar surgeon or a scholar.

If people tell you what you should be, but you have a game plan and are being productive, you’ll learn to say “no” — at least until project one is done. Once your project is done, out on the market, making money, and changing lives, then it’s okay to entertain any ideas that the idea fairy brings to you.

I hope this makes you a lot more productive and teaches you some discipline in time management. My life completely changed once I managed my time wisely: I have less stress, more time on my calendar, and I have more businesses under my belt.
